Deborah Maughan – Hand painted canvases for children

For me, an opportunity to buy a present for a new baby is always an exciting challenge. There is such a vast array of things to chose from: everything from the practical (I certainly was the grateful recipient of several multipack’s of tiny little vests and babygros) to the fabulously impractical (think angora baby booties or solid silver teething rings). While I have found a few special presents which I have given over and over, I am always still on the look out for unusual or unique baby gifts. Deborah Maughan creates just this type of gift.  Deborah is an Irish artist who produces hand painted canvases for children:

Deborah’s canvases come in two sizes (either 12” x 12” or 10” or 10”) and are painted to order so you can chose to incorporate a special baba’s name  and other personal details into the painting. While Deborah’s website shows a number of different designs, she also says that if there is something else that you would like to be painted or would like a different sized canvas, you can contact her. The canvases are €80 each for the larger size or €170 for three of the smaller sized canvases.

I can just imagine how pleased Mr Moo would be with a painting of a race car  with his name on it and while Lollipop is too young to appreciate it now, wouldn’t any little girl love the idea that her dolls and teddies read a fairytale about her while she is out of the room (a kind of Toy Story meets Jackanory scenario)! I reckon these bespoke canvases would make a very special gift for any baba.

Some Father’s Day Gift Ideas

They never do things the way you ask them to, you always have to have a little tug at the nappy that they just put on to make sure it’s on right and they taught your toddler to punch (and can’t understand why you are annoyed!)…….. your other half isn’t perfect and sometimes you could ring his neck but his heart is in the right place and the bottom line is that he really is a great dad! So he does deserve a little something special on June 20th.

If you don’t fancy going down the traditional socks or tie route, here are a few gift options to consider:

Amanda Hancock’s personalised Dad book is a lovely place to store all those special Dad and baba memories like photos of all the fun things they do together, birthday cards, even things like ticket stubs or  event programmes. Even if your other half thinks this sort of thing is sentimental old clap trap now, they will be delighted with it in years to come when that first rugby match they went to together is a dim and distant memory. You select your own photo for the front cover and can chose between a number of different phrases to accompany the photo (my fave is “it is admirable for a man to take his son fishing but there is a special place in heaven for the father who takes his daughter shopping”). The spiral bound book contains 30 pages and comes in either A4 or A5 size. This is super value at €10 for the A5 size and €15.50 for A4.

The Old Record Shop will frame the record which was Number One on the day your other half was born and will present it with a special message from your babas. This is a lovely gift if your other half really loves his music – particularly if he was born on what we might describe as a “Good Music” day, for example those born around 19 June 1971 would be lumbered with Middle Of The Road’s Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep while those born on 21 September 1974 would receive the much cooler  Kung Fu Fighting by Carl Douglas. A framed 7″ vinyl with a personal message would set you back £65 stg plus some extra postage to Ireland.

Summer time means Barbeques and for some reason men seem to think that just because the cooker is outside, they must be at the helm (which makes me think about putting the washing machine in the garden …..). Anyway, a personalised apron from Bag’s of Love is the perfect accessory for those hazy summer cook-outs. You chose your own photo and have the choice of adding text. The apron comes in two sizes and is machine washable. They cost £34.99 plus shipping to Ireland.

Someone in your office has had a baby and you’ve been volunteered to buy the gift; you’ve pulled your pregnant sister in law’s name out of the hat for Kris Kindle; your best pal who lives at the opposite end of the country has had twins……there are lots of circumstances where you need to buy a gift for a new mum or a mum-to-be and either don’t know what to buy or need to buy something that can be delivered.

In some of these situations, the staple-gift is a bunch of flowers. While I like a couple of peonies as much as the next girl, sometimes it’s really lovely to give something that is a little more personal and a little less transient. I’ve recently found an Irish site which may just provide the answer to these buying dilemas.

Baby Elephant is a lovely site which sells gorgeous gift hampers for mums-to-be, new babies and their new mums. There are lots of different hampers to chose from but they all contain fab organic goodies.

The mama-to-be hampers contain things like Lisbeth Dahl hand knitted ballerina slippers, Mama Mio skincare products and Vital Touch prenatal aromatherapy oils.

Mamainwaiting1

The hampers for new babies contain things like Cowshed organic baby skincare products, Organics For Kids playsuits and matching hats and JJ Cole nappy bags.

the_baby_cow

You can get hampers of skincare products just for new mums or you can treat both mammy and her bundle of joy with one of the combination hampers.

You can also create a bespoke hamper, just give the guys at Baby Elephant a call.

All hampers come in lovely gift boxes and can be sent along with a personalised card. The shipping options are great - you can arrange for next day delivery, have your gifts sent by registered post or even have same day delivery to the Dublin maternity hospitals. They also ship internationally.

With such a lovely range of products to chose from and options to suit every budget, Baby Elephant means that now there’s never any reason to resort to a bunch of  yellow carnations !

FingerPrint Jewellry

My birthday is looming and so I’ve been indulging myself slightly by thinking about lovely presents for myself  - I don’t feel too guilty since most of my spare time is spent seeking out great things for the babas.

One thing that I have previously bought to give as presents is FingerPrint jewellry by Button and Bean. Their jewellry makes a really lovely gift for any parent and is available from a fab site called Not On The High Street. The unique feature of this jewellry (the clue is in the name!) is that each piece includes one or more of your baba(s)’ fingerprints cast in polished silver. You may be tired of wiping those pesky little prints off your walls, windows and any other available surfaces but you will never tire of these tiny silver impressions.

Button_Bean_necklace_jpgButton_Bean_cufflinksButton_Bean_Heart_Bracelett_007_jpg

There are several different pieces to chose from necklaces, bracelets, cufflinks and even keyrings. Last year, I got Mr McSpendy a pair of cufflinks for Father’s Day. One has Lollipop’s name and fingerprint on it, the other has Mr Moo’s. Both of them have the words ‘Love you, Daddy’ on the back. They are really cute and are such a lovely keepsake (Lollipop was only a couple of weeks old when we took her print)….plus they are functional!  I was so happy with the cufflinks that for Christmas, I bought my sister a silver bangle with a charm that has my gorgeous Godson’s name and fingerprint on it. Both pieces are really good quality and very well made.

So how do they get your baba’s print on the jewellry? Well it does require some hands on make-and-do type effort on your part but its worth it. When you order the jewellry, Button and Bean send you out a fingerprint impression kit. This little kit contains special moulding clay and easy to follow instructions. You simply mix the two types of moulding clay that are inlcuded in the kit, take the print and  then post it back in the pre-paid envelope. You get enough clay to take two impressions of each print and Button and Bean will use the best one. I needed the second attempt for the cufflinks because the clay dries really quickly and I didn’t move swiftly enough first time but I got two really great prints second time round.

Button_Bean_keyring

A few weeks later you get your beautiful jewellry in the post. This jewellry is truly unique and as your baba grows, it will be lovely to remember how small those little fingers once were. If you are going to give some of this jewellry as a gift, check out the website to find out delivery times (they get pretty busy around Christmas time and other holidays like Father’s and Mother’s day) so you can decide whether you will be able to order the kit, take the print and give the finished jewellry as the gift. If you don’t have enough time to get the finished gift, you can just give the impression kit to your lucky recipient (an explanation of what your finished gift comes with the kit) who will then have the added fun of being able to make the prints themselves.

Prices range from £75stg for keyrings and pendants to £150stg for double sided cufflinks.

PS: Mr McSpendy, if you are reading this, I really like the heart shaped necklace….conveniently it comes in a two heart design too……Two hearts

Anorak

I’ve been meaning to write about Anorak for a long time. My friend Jane, who is a very cool mama, told me about this company a while ago (she has the very funky picnic blanket pictured below). Based in the UK, Anorak features the work of designer Laurie Robertson who is a specialist in style driven, durable outdoor products such as travel, camping and garden accessories. According to the website, childhood memories of family camping adventures were the inspiration behind the brand and the outdoors has certainly influenced the fabulous ‘Kissing Animals’ range. You can get everything from waterproof toiletry bags to duvets in these funky prints.

This picnic blanket is so clever – it rolls up into an easily portable package (see picture on the right above). The stag side is 100% cotton while the underside is waterproof….no more damp bottoms at your family picnics! Definitely one to consider if your family is the outdoorsy type.

The Kissing Robin Shopper is a very funky way to be green when you’re out shopping and the Kissing Rabbit baby changing bag  will make you and your baba the talk of the play group!

I was having trouble deciding what to buy until, that is, I saw this:

ANORAK_KISSING_HORSES_SINGLE_BEDDING

I had been looking for some funky bed linen for Mr Moo. I was having difficulty finding something that is bright and funky and not branded (I have a funny thing about merchandising…can’t bear the idea of filling Mr Moo’s world with Thomas this, Peppa that and Disney the other!).  Anyway, can’t wait till it arrives because he is completely horse-obsessed and is just going to adore it. Giddy Up !!

Check out the full fantastic range at Anorak. Thanks for the tip off Jane !

Cloud Cuckoo Designs

So there I was, sipping a glass of wine while browsing the web (no shocks there I here you say…) when I came across the Cloud Cuckoo Designs website. Their site is full of gorgeous things including some fab children’s textiles. Their current range, which includes  things for bath time, bed time, sleep time and feeding time, is based on three really funky prints – owl, kitty and monkey.  These are designed by the site’s founder Claire Pugh who has designed textiles for GAP, M&S and John Lewis.

I have totally fallen for their sleeping bags. They come in either 0.5 or 2.5 tog and are made from organic cotton.  At £22 Stg each they are great value and a lot cheaper than other brands on the market.

There are also hooded towels with the same quirky print. Again, they are made of 100% organic cotton. These are £24 Stg each and would make really lovely gifts.

Wooden Name Jigsaws

I have a real soft spot for personalised things. When he was a baby, my brother David got a tiny blue t-shirt with his name (in red felt lettering) across the front. I loved and coveted this t-shirt  (though obviously I wanted a ‘Paula’ version!) and since then have always been drawn to personalised items. Couple my love of personalised things with my obsession with all things wooden and you get a wooden name puzzle:

Jigsawname Lachlan_jpg_cc158a915189d8eaab0b5dd67673c48f

These gorgeous puzzles are made by Mooo, an Australian company specialising in personalised children’s gifts and clothing. They start at $24.95 AUD (which roughly equates to €15.35) for a three letter name and increase by $3AUD (or $1.85) for each additional letter. For an additional $14.95 AUD you can get a special wooden storage box but I like the idea of leaving these puzzles out on show. The letter pieces themselves are painted (using child safe paint) in vibrant colours and the back of the puzzle is decorated with an array of rainbow coloured animals.

I got one each for Mr Moo and Lollipop for Christmas and they really are beautifully made.   For the two puzzles, the shipping to Dublin cost $13.70 (€8.43) which I thought was pretty good.

What a lovely way to teach a child how to recognise and spell their own name. I think that they would make a lovely and really original present

Mooo are currently out of stock of the 3-6 letter name sizes but don’t let a delay deter you, these are worth waiting for.
