Not your average bear…. Kuma bears

I’m always on the look out for baby gifts that have a little personality: something that’s a little different but that still has baba appeal. I reckon these Kuma bears from Areaware fit the bill nicely.

These colourful little bears are made from organic cotton which has been hand-silk screened using environmentally friendly, child safe soy-based inks.

Every baba should have at least one teddy bear and there’s no reason why it has to be boring. These charming jointed bears just seem to ooze charisma and its easy to see how they might become a trusted friend and constant companion.

They measure 12 x 6 x 4 inches and cost €33 each from Design Delicatessen.

Best push and pull toys

My recent sojourn into the world of baby walkers allowed me to take a peek at the delightful world of push and pull toys. These gorgeous traditional toys are purely frivolous so there are no set rules on what to buy –  just chose something that will delight your baba. There are some fabulous toys out there for your baba to shove and drag to their little heart’s desire. Here are a few of my favourites to whet your appetite:

Best Baby Walkers

These days, Lollipop is up on her feet almost all of the time. She is a very confident ‘cruiser’ (why oh why do they call it that??) but is not yet fully brave enough to risk too much ‘free walking’ so when it came to choosing a birthday gift for her first birthday, a walker seemed like the obvious choice. As usual, I didn’t just walk into a shop and pick up the first one that I saw…..there was no way I was going to let an opportunity to spend hours scouring the web pass me by.

From my research (and past experience with Mr Moo), I think that the key to a good walker is a mixture of:

  • stability (you need one that won’t tip over easily  -  well, not many one year olds understand the law of the lever and baba / walker pile ups on the living room floor ain’t pretty);
  • traction (a lot of walkers have no traction whatsoever which causes them to shoot forward too quickly leaving your baba with a face full of floor boards!);
  • longevity  (a toy that is just a walker has a short shelf life so the best ones have a life long after the all too short cruising stage is over).

Here are four of the best ones that I found:

Old school – This John Crane walker is full of lovely building blocks which will provide hours of fun – take out the blocks and any favourite toys or teddy bear passengers can be transported:

John Crane - Car and blocks

Girly Girl – This Pintoy walker doubles as a pram so your little lady and her dolls can get out and about:

Activity-a-go-g0 – This EverEarth walker has lots of clever built in activities to entertain your baba  - plus it’s eco friendly and is an award winner (it won the Creative Child Magazine 2009 Preferred Choice Award in the Toddler Toys Activity Center category)

Ever earth

Transformer – The Mishi Design Grow Up is the Madonna of walkers as it can totally reinvent itself each time your baba grows out of it. It starts life as a walker with a basket then transforms into a ride-on bike with a trailer and then for it’s finale it turns into a trolley – fantastically clever!

Mid-season bargains

So the weather isn’t exactly instilling confidence in you to go out and buy your baba’s summer wardrobe but those fingertips are aching to surf n’ shop. Well there are a few budget conscious buys out there which will allow you to scratch that shopping itch without breaking the bank. Here’s just the tip of the bargain hunting iceberg:

Esty – A Handmade Wonderland

Many of you will already know about the wonders of Etsy but for those of you who don’t know about its treasures, it is an online maketplace for buying and selling a vast array of handmade (or vintage) goods. You can buy everything from wedding dresses to lampshades, paper weights to fishing lures but for me, the best thing about Etsy is its children’s section, it is amazing. Diverse, divine and (though I hate to admit it) dangerous! It is so hard to resist those fabulous handmade goodies.

I’ve made a lot of  Etsy purchases and it’s difficult to know where to start but to kick off what I suspect will be a long series of posts about Etsy, I thought I would share something that I really love.  Little Alouette makes beautiful wooden toys for babies and children. Their bi-line is ‘Wood for Wee Ones’ and their profile indicates that their products are handmade in a workshop which contains ”cups of tea, laughing children, and disco music so each product will come to you infused with love and bliss!”  Well I’m not sure about the love-bliss infusion but they are truly beautiful toys.

If you know any babas who are teething and who deserve a little treat then check these out:

Gigi Giraffe Gigi Girafffe is an organic hardwood teething toy and she is gorgeous (admittedly, I do have a particular soft spot for giraffes). But not only does she look good, she is also fantastic value at just $14 (roughly €10)

Little LarkThe Lil Lark teether is made from organic Maple and I just love this lilttle bird’s shape. Again it’s just $14 and, like all of the Little Alouette toys, it comes in a compostable bag (If I’m honest, that doesn’t really sound like a great idea….what happens if you leave it in its bag…I’m getting visual images of beautiful organic wooden toys covered in mould and odd looking mushrooms !!) and is accompanied by a wood care guide.

There are so many lovely shapes and silhouettes to chose from that the only problem you’ll have is deciding which one to chose….

Crazy Forts

As children, building ‘huts’ was a very popular game in our house. My sister and I would hook our duvets on to the picture hooks above our twin beds and spend hours of fun having all kinds of adventures under our makeshift canopies. So it was a real trip down memory lane when I came across Crazy Forts on a US site.

Crazy forts box

I think they are a fantastic idea, a series of plastic batons which can be inserted into circular sockets to construct pretty much any shaped hut you can think of – check out the igloo, rocket, tunnel and other shapes suggested by the manufacturers:

Throw a sheet or a blanket over any of these structures and you instantly have a fantastic hut, the potential for fun here is just endless. You can also buy a set of two lights which attach to any of the round sockets so that you can light the interior of your creations….fantastic ! Sick of one shape? simply dismantle it and start again, copy one of the suggested shapes or experiment with your own designs. Best of all, at the end of a long day’s hut-playing, you can take it all apart and store it neatly in its box, so clever!

The great news is that I have found them for sale on a Spanish site for €59.95 (throw in an extra €19.95 and you get the two lights).  Its probably too late to add this to Santa’s list but I reckon that Crazy Forts may make an appearance at Mr Moo’s next birthday !

Forget Prozac, get a Jumperoo

Jumperoo

At first glance, this seems to epitomise everything I hate about a lot of toys, its garish, its noisy and its made predominantly of plastic. However, Fisherprice’s  Rainforest Jumperoo is more than meets the eye.  Its basically a souped up version of a traditional bouncer but without the need for the doorway (I always hated those ones….the constant dread that the whole contraption would dislodge itself from the door frame and snap back to hit the baba on the head!).

Your baba sits in the centre in a seat which swivels 360 degrees and from that position can play with the toys which are located on all sides or jump and bounce to their hearts content. Fit 3 AA batteries and the whole thing is set to music (well, I say music but it is really a cacophony of rainforest sounds set to a slightly irritating jingle).

When Mr Moo was four months old, I searched for something that would keep him both entertained and safe (at that time, he was constantly trying to set a world record by rolling off his playmat in mere nano-seconds!). After some research on the web, I discovered the jumperoo and like any self respecting shopaholic rushed straight out to buy it.

At first Mr Moo was just delighted at being upright and was happy to play with the toys. It was a few days before he realised that he could jump but as soon as he found ‘his bounce’ there was no stopping him. He would happily spend up to an hour attempting to reach the sky and tugging or spinning the toys. No parent needs to be persuaded that something that occupies a child for 60 minutes is a good thing !!

Mr Moo used his jumperoo daily (sometimes a couple of times a day) for many months and his sister is now proving herself to be quite the bouncer, so although it wasn’t cheap (it currently comes in at approx £95/€105), it has certainly earned its keep in our house.

Without a doubt though, the best feature of the jumperoo is its comic value. When your baba is in there bouncing and laughing you just can’t help smiling. A baby’s laugh is the most contagious thing normally but combine that laughter with the sight of your little trampolinist desperately trying to embed themselves in the ceiling and its comedy gold.  We laughed and laughed at Mr Moo and Lollipop is just as funny. All I can say is, if you’re feeling down, its jumperoo time !!

PS: If you don’t like the rainforest version, Fisherprice have also launched the Precious Planet version.

Rainbow Bead Grasper

Rainbowbeads

Its not everyday that you come across a toy that adults are drawn to as much as babies are, but I’ve found one!

The Rainbow Bead Grasper is made from wood  and safe, non-toxic oils and is an absolute joy to hold. The rainbow coloured balls are  joined together by an elasticized heavy duty string which allows the balls to roll around and over each other in a really lovely way. Better than any  de-stresser I’ve tried, you just can’t help playing with this.

I got this for Lollipop when she was three months old and she adores it. The balls are large enough to make them really easy to hold and the bright colours really hold her attention, she gets excited each time she sees it.

Our grasper gets compliments (from adults as well as children) wherever we go. I’ve also given it as a present and it has gone down really well.

At €11.25 its a bargain and has the added bonus that when your child has outgrown it you can bring it into the office to help you through those more stressful moments!!
