Little Nutty helmets

Mr Moo turns four next month and, as is my wont, I’ve already planned and purchased his gift. He has outgrown his Like-a-bike Midi, a fabulous balance bike that he has been whizzing around on since he turned 2, so we’ve decided to get  him a new bike. This one has pedals, which we think we will remove in the first instance to allow Mr Moo get used to balancing on this new larger, heavier frame. With any luck the pedals can go back on and he’ll be cycling around at high speed in no time.

We want him to get used to wearing a helmet right from the start with this new bike. For this reason, I wanted to find a helmet that was not only the right size and complied with all the relevant safety standards but that he would want to wear. So I started to search around for helmets with fun designs and bright colours and came across the American Little Nutty range of toddler helmets by Nutcase. The Little Nutty range is designed for toddlers up to five years of age and theyhave the following features (here comes the science bit…):

- One size with Spin-Dial Fit System
- ABS injection shell
- EPS Shock absorbing liner
- Classic 11 vents design for the perfect ventilation
- Full surround interior
- Quick release buckles
- CPSC & CE EN 1078 Multi Sport Standard Safety

I’ve bought the Magic 8 Ball version for Mr Moo

but there are lots of options to choose from:

Here are the measurement instructions so that you can get the right sized helmet for your baba’s little Nut.

New Model Bibi Strolli Rider Comfort +

How excited was I when I discovered that Swiss company Bibi have taken my number one favourite children’s product (the Strolli Rider) and improved it!

The new Bibi Strolli Rider Comfort + has all of the benefits of the original version (which I extolled at length here) but has been improved as follows:

  1. A new seat. Where the previous version had a saddle type seat, the new model has a padded seat which includes a back support;
  2. Safety belt. Attached to the new seat, this is a super addition if you have a little wriggler on your hands;
  3. Sculpted handle. The foam encased handle will be more comfortable for your baba to hold onto and lean on;
  4. Newly designed wheels. These have been designed to run even smoother than those on the previous version.

These are fantastic improvements to what was already a fantastic product. A year on, we still use ours every day, Mr Moo continues to love it and it’s as good as new.

Best £89.95 I’ve ever spent !

Rear Facing Car Seat – BeSafe iZi Combi Isofix X3

We seem to have been a little slower than our mainland european counterparts to embrace the rear facing car seat but it is hard to ignore all of the studies out there that say, they are not just safer than forward facing seats, they are five times safer. So it doesn’t exactly tax our grey matter to know that rear facing seats are what we should be buying. Unfortunately though, they aren’t that easy to find here in Ireland, or in the UK for that matter .

Last week, we bought Lollipop her follow on car seat (up to then she’d been in her Maxi Cosi baby car seat). I did quite a lot of research on which one to buy and ultimately plumped for the BeSafe iZi Combi Isofix X3.

BESAFE - IZI COMBI X3

BeSafe is the leading Norweigen child car seat manufacturer and their iZi Combi Isofix X3 is the latest model of their award winning seat. It’s suitable for children aged between 6 months and four years and is one of only a few seats approved to the Swedish ‘Plus Test’ standard which in conjunction with the standard ECE test (required for sale within the EU) form the strictest safety standard for infant seats used today. This model can be used as either a rear or forward facing seat but we’re only going to use ours rear facing. Its very easy to install and use and is packed full of safety features.

You do need to install a mirror to allow you to see your baba when you are both in your seats in the car but since all baby car seats like the Maxi Cosi are rear facing you’ll probably have one anyway. It is also quite large so it won’t suit every car (check out the compatible car list) but Mr Moo’s seat is pretty big so we’re used to that.

Its not a cheap seat (its around £305 – £310 Stg) but my sister and I took the recession by the horns and looked for a bulk discount for buying two. After a few calls, we got the best deal (and I’d have to say the best service) from  In Car Safety Centre in Belfast. Here, my sister (who was charged with the collection and haulage duties….well I had done the research!!)  got really great personal service and installation from the owner of this company. Don’t worry if you aren’t near Belfast, In Car Safety Centre have an online shop or you can get the Izi Combi Isofix X3 from Amazon.

I am delighted with the seat, Lollipop seems to love her new view (she’s up quite a bit higher now and can see out of the window) and the peace of mind associated with buying one of the safest seats out there is well worth the extra few quid!

The Hip Hammock

I have just returned to work after almost 8 glorious months at home with Lollipop. She has now joined her brother in creche and, thankfully, seems to be loving it. I have been experimenting with different ways to bring my troops to and from creche and was delighted to re-discover the Hip Hammock which I bought for Mr Moo.

hiphammock2

Hip Hammocks are baby/child carriers designed and made by an American called Nancy Swanke. I discovered them when Mr Moo outgrew his BabyBjorn carrier (which I had loved using). There are times when a pram isn’t the most convenient mode of transport (for example, as I recently discovered, a trip around IKEA!) and baby carriers are a great option but its quite hard to find one for a slightly older child. The Hip Hammock is designed to hold children up to 3 years old and is really comfortable because it disperses most of your child’s weight around your hip rather than around your neck and shoulders. I found this a really comfortable way to carry Mr Moo and its really lovely to have your baba at this level so that you can chat to them while you are on the move. Plus being carried at this height gives the baba a really lovely view of the world.

For me, its a really great and comfortable way to carry Lollipop and it means that I am also able to hold Mr Moo’s hand as we saunter along. Because Lollipop is facing me when I carry her this way, it is really easy to chat and interact with her – its great to be able to catch up on all her news and hear all the latest gossip from her new gang of 8 month old buddies!

The Hip Hammock costs $48 and each one is custom made (using measurements you provide when you place the order). We have a plain black one but there are a number of different fabrics to chose from and each one is lined with really soft fleece which makes it even more comfy. So if you are looking for a carrier for your older child, give the Hip Hammock some thought.

Just a note, Ms Swanke sold rights in her design to Playtex who also make and manufacture Hip Hammocks. But based on the reviews that I have read of the mass produced hammock, I would opt for Nancy’s custom made version every time.

Things for your Changing Bag – Part I

Like many countries, we have recently been going through what the meteorologists have been calling ‘A Cold Snap’, roughly translated, it’s been really very cold with lots of ice and snow. Nice to look at yes, but yesterday our newly acquired winter wonderland almost pushed this mammy over the edge!!

At 4pm, Lollipop and I piled into the car (I thought it was too cold to walk…..what an error of judgement that proved to be!) to go collect Mr Moo from creche. We returned home at 8pm….yes 8pm!!! Creche is less than 2km from our house and on a normal day (horrendous city centre traffic notwithstanding) this would be a 40 minute round trip with around 15 minutes of that time spent in the creche itself.

Unfortunately, yesterday was anything but a normal day with unusually low temperatures (-7 °C in places), ground frost and widespread compacted ice. The road conditions were horrific and the result was utter chaos. While I somehow managed to reach creche in 25 minutes, due to numerous crashes, breakdowns and cars unable to traverse the ice ahead of us, the return journey took us over three hours.

Having not in my wildest dreams (or nightmares!) ever imagined that the journey would take so long, I was not prepared for this and had no food or drink in the car for my two babas. Fifty minutes at a standstill in one particular location with both babas screaming means that I will NEVER allow this situation to repeat itself.

I finished weaning Lollipop last week so I was no longer able to feed her myself (how great it was to be able to feed her whenever and wherever she needed it) and two hours into the journey she was very cross at not having been fed. So, what’s the answer?….A few clever additions to my changing bag which I would recommend to all – you just never know when you will find yourself stranded with a hungry child:

  • Pre-sterisiled bottles are my new best friends. I used to look at these in the pharmacy and wonder what environment-hating mothers actually bought these…how wrong I was to judge. Having seen the purple-with-anger face of my darling girl screaming with hunger, I now know the value of these handy little miracles.  There are several types to chose from but these Tommy Tippee ones are good value at £5.49 for 10.
  • Cartons of pre-made formula. Combine these with the pre-sterilised bottles and you have a happy baba in even the remotest location. They last for ages so you can keep them in the changing bag for a long time.,
  • Packet of organic rice cakes – these have a number of advantages, they can be enjoyed by babies as young as 7 months buts are also loved by older kids, they are healthy (as far as snack foods go), they are relatively clean to eat (well, there’s no point in adding a mess to clean up to your emergency feeding session), like the pre-made formula, they have quite a long shelf life and will keep your baba going until you reach your destination. At one point in the journey we simply abandoned the car to walk to the nearest shop to buy a pack of these – the babas made short work of the pack and it was a complete godsend.
  • Small bottle of water – it sounds so obvious but also so easy to forget –  I had been meaning to replenish my usual stocks for ages and just never got round to it.

Ok, so this isn’t rocket science and many of you may already have these things tucked in your change bag but if this post saves even one mother from enduring the ear-drum perforating screams of their baba (by preventing one poor  baba from being upset in the first place ) then its worth putting it out there!

ps: you will be relieved to know that both Lollipop and Mr Moo survived their ordeal though they both tucked into their breakfast this morning with unusual vigour.

Is it a changing bag? Is it a booster seat?

Hoppopfront

Clever things that make life easier are always welcome in our house and consequently the red carpet was rolled out for this bag.

At first glance its just a changing bag but there’s a lot more to this bag than meets the eye. Its also a booster seat, how clever is that?

I bought a Hoppop changing bag/booster seat when Mr Moo was almost nine months old and just starting creche. I had previously used the changing bag which was attached to our pram but for creche I needed something to transport the various changes of clothes, drinks, snacks and toys that Mr Moo needed for creche and the commute.  The Hoppop was an immediate hit, was used constantly and is still proving useful today (almost two years later).

As a changing bag, the Hoppop works like any normal bag. It has one large compartment and two smaller side compartments for bottles etc. The main section has a number of internal pockets and fits everything you need for feeding and changing. It is also reinforced by a plastic insert which supports your child when the bag is used as a seat and which can be removed in order to wash the bag. This insert also protects the contents of the bag so there are no more squished sandwiches or bruised bananas.

Lastly, there is a pocket at the back of the back which contains a changing mat.  So really, as a bag, this one has everything you need. Its not the largest changing bag that you can buy but I’ve always found that with changing bags, like handbags, the larger they are, the more difficult it is to find anything.

Put the bag onto a stable chair and it tuns into a booster seat with two simple movements. First, the shoulder strap unhooks,  passes under the seat of the chair and rehooks to the bag. Then a section on the back of the bag unhooks and attaches to the back of the chair by way of an adjustable strap. This action reveals the seat area for your child and their safety harness.  And voila, your bag is a chair!

Hoppop6

The real beauty of this product is how useful it is. Whether you are in a restaurant that doesn’t have high chairs, a friend’s house for lunch or in your own house with a little guest, this booster seat comes to the rescue.

Like any child’s seat, this one will get dirty and when it does, no problem. Simply remove the plastic insert and put the bag into the washing machine – fantastic !!

Its so convenient to have a seat for your baby slung over your shoulder and even better that this seat also contains all your feeding and changing things. Its so easy to use and has fitted every chair that I’ve tried it on, its made life so much easier for us. The added bonus is that Mr Moo loves sitting at the ‘big’ table with us on a chair that is the same as ours, so everyone is a winner !

The Hoppop bag is available in a number of different colours/designs and comes in at around £55/€61.50. While its not cheap, we have got a tremendous amount of use out of it and have no regrets!

Bibi Strolli

The best toddler ride-on attachment ever !

The best toddler ride-on attachment ever !

The Swiss Strolli Rider is, without doubt, one of the best things that I have ever bought online (and lets face it, given the vast amount I buy online, it has some seriously stiff competition!). This clever piece of engineering attaches to your pram or stroller and provides your toddler with a stable, comfortable and fun place to ride with you and your baby. The thing that sets it apart for me is the fact that the way it attaches to the stroller means that it is totally to one side and does not get in the way of  whoever is pushing the pram. I tried out some board type attachments in various shops and each one got completely in the way of my stride….battered and bruised ankles do not a happy mammy make !

Mr Moo, who is two and a half, really loves riding on this and lots of his friends have begged to have a go too. I bought this as a last resort before buying a double pram (which would have brought the total number of prams that we own to 3, even for a shopoholic that’s too many) and I am so pleased with it that I haven’t even looked once at double prams since we got it.

Is there anything bad to say about it? Well, its only stable if its attached correctly. Mr Moo landed on his cute little behind once when I hadn’t tightened it properly but this has not happened again. You also need to take care when going up onto footpaths which don’t have ramps (getting down off such paths does not appear to be a problem) but I find that if I just hold on to the handle at the back of the saddle we can make the maneouvre without any loss of balance.

The only other thing I would say about this is that it is not for you shrinking violets out there. This thing attracts a lot (and I mean A LOT) of attention. So far, we haven’t been out of the house once with it without being stopped to talk about it and everywhere we go, people are pointing and proclaiming that it is the most clever thing they have ever seen. Mr Moo loves it, he thinks people are pointing and smiling at him so he’s delighted with the attention. Just hold your head up and smile I say, this thing rocks and is worth all the curiosity it attracts!

You can buy it from Amazon for around £90.
